The Summer of Impossible Things – Rowan Coleman #Blogtour

It is my absolute pleasure and honour to be on the blog tour for Rowan Coleman’s wonderful new book The Summer of Impossible Things. #ImpossibleThings

Book Description:

If you could change the past, would you?

Thirty years ago, something terrible happened to Luna’s mother. Something she’s only prepared to reveal after her death.

Now Luna and her sister have a chance to go back to their mother’s birthplace and settle her affairs. But in Brooklyn they find more questions than answers, until something impossible – magical – happens to Luna, and she meets her mother as a young woman back in the summer of 1977.

At first Luna’s thinks she’s going crazy, but if she can truly travel back in time, she can change things. But in doing anything – everything – to save her mother’s life, will she have to sacrifice her own?

My Review:  Firstly, my thanks to the publisher, Netgalley and Rowan Coleman for the advance copy.  I will admit to not reading the blurb before starting this book, so I wasn’t sure what to expect except if Rowan had written it – I was bound to love it.  The Summer of Impossible Things is basically a book about making sacrifices for the people you love.  I admit to only reading one other time travel book before (11.22.63 by Stephen King) so this isn’t a topic I know much about, but what I do know is how the book made me feel.  The Summer of Impossible Things is a book that made me question how far I would travel to protect my family, what would I do to ensure my loved ones are happy and safe?  This wonderful story about Luna and Pea and their journey to save their mother was both moving and beautiful and thought-provoking (and whilst reading it I was hoping Hollywood would make this into a film too!)

I am also delighted to share with you Rowan Coleman’s blog post for this tour written especially for Compulsive Readers:

Love Not Hate

For the last several years we, the readers and books lovers of the world, have been mad for scary, violent, dark and frightening stories, that will grip and surprise us, and I count myself amongst the legion of fans of crime and thrillers, because, they are brilliantly good entertainment. And it’s certainly true that ‘The Summer of Impossible Things’ has its fair share of darkness, a proper villain and some twists and surprises.

But this isn’t a story of cruelty or hate; it’s a story of kindness, love and above all courage. Because when I wrote ‘Impossible Things’ I wanted to create the kind of super-hero that I believe lives inside all of us.

Luna can do things that you and I can’t. She can travel back and forth through time, and change the past to alter the present, to try and save her mother from the terrible events that ruin her life, leading to her eventual suicide. She does this knowing that if she saves her mother she risks her own existence. She does it because Luna is made of courage, and above all love.

She loves her mother, she loves her sister Pia, she loves the world around her in the present day, and the hot, vibrant streets of Brooklyn in 1977. And when she falls in love for the first time it’s with a man she meets in the past, thirty years before she is even born.

Her time travelling ability aside though, Luna isn’t any different for the rest of us. She is an ordinary human being, just like you and me. And just like Luna we have the power within ourselves to be brave, to be kind, to choose love over hate every single time. Luna goes through that extraordinary transformation that we all do when we are faced with difficult choices, the kind of choices that reveal our true character, strength and resilience. The qualities that make us human.

When you read ‘The Summer of Impossible Things’ I hope that you will be entertained, gripped and entranced by Luna’ s transatlantic time travelling adventure, the secrets she uncovers, the ghosts she faces and the love she embodies, and when you’ve finished reading it, and you leave the searing heat wave of Brooklyn 1977 behind you, I hope you’ll look in the mirror and you’ll think, yeah, that’s me too.

I’m a super-hero too.
