Evelyn, After – Victoria Helen Stone

Evelyn Tester is sleepwalking through her suburban life—until a late-night phone call startles her awake. Her husband, a prestigious psychiatrist, has been in an accident. And he isn’t alone.

Suddenly Evelyn’s world isn’t as tidy as she thought. And in the midst of it all is Juliette, not only her husband’s secret lover but also his patient. If news of the affair were to get out, it would ruin more than just Evelyn’s marriage. Although it’s a bitter pill for Evelyn to swallow, protecting her family means staying silent—even if, as she begins to discover, the night of the accident has consequences far more dangerous than the unmasking of an affair.

But the more Evelyn learns about Juliette’s picture-perfect life—complete with a handsome, unsuspecting husband—the more she yearns for revenge…and satisfaction. Her growing obsession fuels her rage, burning away her complacency. What will be left of her after it flames out?

Book Information: Length: 258 pages. Publisher: Lake Union Publishing. Publication Date: 1 November 2016

About the Author: Victoria Helen Stone is the nom de plume for USA Today bestselling author Victoria Dahl. After publishing more than twenty-five novels, she is now taking a turn toward the darker side of genre fiction. Born and educated in the Midwest, she finished her first manuscript just after college. In 2016, the American Library Association awarded her the prestigious Reading List Award for outstanding genre fiction. Having escaped the plains of her youth, she now resides with her family in a small town high in the Rocky Mountains, where she enjoys hiking, snowshoeing, and not skiing (too dangerous).

My Review:

I recently discovered Victoria Helen Stone on Kindle Unlimied and devoured her Jane Doe series so was very excited to start Evelyn, After which is also free on Kindle Unlimited.

Evelyn Tester is a mum, wife, school volunteer and general doormat for everyone in her life. Her husband Gary is a successful doctor who loves to belittle Evelyn to the point of gaslighting her. She works as a volunteer at her son’s school where her employers take advantage of her on a daily basis giving her more and more work to do.

She spends her days being undermined and taken for granted and her nights are spent in a daze of sleeping pills prescribed by her husband.

Late one night she is woken from her sleep by a call from her husband who has had a car crash, he’s been drinking and needs her to rescue him urgently. However he is not alone – there is a young woman with him. Juliette is young and beautiful and as Evelyn starts to delve deeper, she discovers that Juliette is Gary’s secret lover and patient.

The story then takes on a darker tone as Evelyn becomes obsessed with Juliette and her handsome unsuspecting husband Noah.

At 258 pages, Evelyn, After is a thrilling story about relationships and revenge and love and lies which I thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend to fans to domestic noir and dark family dramas.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
