About the Book: Dexter meets Mr. and Mrs. Smith in this wildly compulsive debut thriller about a couple whose fifteen-year marriage has finally gotten too interesting…
Our love story is simple. I met a gorgeous woman. We fell in love. We had kids. We moved to the suburbs. We told each other our biggest dreams, and our darkest secrets. And then we got bored.
We look like a normal couple. We’re your neighbours, the parents of your kid’s friend, the acquaintances you keep meaning to get dinner with.
We all have secrets to keeping a marriage alive.
Ours just happens to be getting away with murder.
About the Author: Samantha Downing was born in the Bay Area, and currently lives in New Orleans, where she is furiously typing away on her next psychological thriller. My Lovely Wife is her first novel.
My Review. Last week I asked the members of THE Book Club “What is guaranteed to make you buy a book?” and I went on to say that my tick list would include a bat shit crazy female psycho; an unreliable narrator, spooky twins, dark humour and a killer twist. Someone recommended MY LOVELY WIFE so I started it immediately.
Well you could knock me down with a feather duster as MY LOVELY WIFE contains 4 out of my 5 requirements (to be honest the spooky twins wouldn’t have worked in this story anyway) and I really can’t believe this book is Samantha Downing’s DEBUT novel.
Our narrator is happily married to Millicent, has 2 teenage children and is a professional tennis coach for an affluent country club. They’ve been married for 15 years and have found an unusual way to keep their marriage alive!
This is one of those books that gripped me from the opening paragraph, shocked me at the end of the first chapter and didn’t stop entertaining me until the final sentence.
I’m not going to give anything away, but this is a dark, sinister and occasionally humorous tale with some excellent twists along the way. I would 100% recommend it to fans of psychological thrillers and I have already pre-ordered her next novel He Started It which comes out 11 June 2020.
