The Diviners are back in this thrilling and eerie third installment by number one New York Times best-selling author Libba Bray.
New York City.
1927.
Lights are bright.
Jazz is king.
Parties are wild.
And the dead are coming…
After battling a supernatural sleeping sickness that claimed two of their own, the Diviners have had enough lies. They’re more determined than ever to uncover the mystery behind their extraordinary powers, even as they face off against an all-new terror. Out on Ward’s Island, far from the city’s bustle, sits a mental hospital haunted by the lost souls of people long forgotten–ghosts who have unusual and dangerous ties to the man in the stovepipe hat, also known as the King of Crows.
With terrible accounts of murder and possession flooding in from all over and New York City on the verge of panic, the Diviners must band together and brave the sinister ghosts invading the asylum, a fight that will bring them face-to-face with the King of Crows. But as the explosive secrets of the past come to light, loyalties and friendships will be tested, love will hang in the balance, and the Diviners will question all that they’ve ever known. All the while, malevolent forces gather from every corner in a battle for the very soul of a nation–a fight that could claim the Diviners themselves.
Heart-pounding action and terrifying moments will leave you breathless in the third book of the four-book Diviners series by number one New York Times best-selling author Libba Bray.

My Review:
This is the 3rd book in The Diviners Young Adult/Fantasy series and once again skilfully narrated by the silvertongued January LaVoy. If you haven’t listened or read the first two in the series you need to STOP reading this and start with Book 1 – The Diviners.
If you are still reading this, I shall assume you know all about books 1 and 2 OR you don’t care and want to read more about this book anyway.
This series is set in New York City in the early 1920’s and centres around a group of gifted young adults, each with their own “super powers”, known as The Diviners. Evie O’Neill is the City’s Sweetheart Seer, a radio star with a difference as she can read objects. Ling and Henry can dream walk, Sam can make himself invisible and the Campbell brothers, Isiaah and Memphis have unique and powerful gifts.
This story follows on immediately from book 2 and The Diviners find themselves facing pure evil, The Man in the Stovepipe Hat, who is wreaking havoc and death all around.
This book sees the cast of characters growing both personally and emotionally, relationships are evolving and feelings are bubbling over. With a vast cast of personalities, Before The Devil Breaks You literally has someone that everyone can relate to.
This is a whopping 21 and a half hours long, but it doesn’t feel it when you are transported back to the roaring 20’s with the help of January’s soothing voice.
If you enjoy the supernatural side, or young adult, or fantasy, or historical fiction or a story of friendship, loyalty and love, then I would definitely suggest downloading this series.
