AS FEATURED ON BBC RADIO 4 – WOMAN’S HOUR
“THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT THIS IS GOING TO BE ONE OF MY TOP TEN BOOKS OF THE YEAR. THERE WERE TIMES WHEN I WAS ACTUALLY A LITTLE BIT SCARED OF TURNING OVER THE PAGE. THIS IS A MIND-BENDING PSYCHOLOGICAL HEAD-F**K OF THE HIGHEST ORDER. I LOVED IT!” Anne Cater, Random Things Through My Letterbox
“WHAT A WONDERFUL, DARK, PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER – THIS HAD ME QUESTIONING MY OWN SANITY MANY TIMES. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AND CAN’T WAIT TO READ MORE FROM THIS TALENTED AUTHOR.” Tracy Fenton, CompulsiveReaders.com
“A WONDERFULLY OBSERVED TALE. CLEVER, COMPELLING AND UTTERLY CAPTIVATING.” Caroline Smailes, author of The Drowning of Arthur Braxton
Cassandra and a group of her friends enjoy Sunday lunch together on a perfect summer’s day. They’re pleased to welcome their glamorous new neighbour and novelist, Ellie, who has rented a house in the village to work on her book. She likes to place herself in the centre of her plots, she says, although it’s hard to see what she’ll find to write about in this quiet country backwater.
As Ellie slots effortlessly into the village social scene, Cass begins to feel increasingly alienated from her friends and isolated from her family but, for the life of her, she can’t fathom out why . . .
When I read this book back in March 2014 I had only just started reading dark, psychological thrillers and this is what I wrote then:
“Imagine a stranger coming into your life and turning everyone you love against you and making you doubt your own sanity. That’s exactly what happens to Ellie in this story and you can’t help but feel her paranoia and confusion. This is a book that makes you question your own sanity at times and certainly makes your skin crawl and feel uncomfortable. Loved it.“
That was before my blog and setting up TBC and so my reviews weren’t that detailed, however my opinion hasn’t changed 7 years later and the fact I can still remember where I was when I read it and how it made me feel proves what a clever and talented author Ms Forbes is.
Compelling, dark, disturbing, chilling and terrifying in places – this page-turner will keep you up all night!
