Lair of Dreams – Libba Bray (The Diviners Book 2)

After a supernatural showdown with a serial killer, Evie O’Neill has outed herself as a Diviner. With her uncanny ability to read people’s secrets, she’s become a media darling, earning the title “America’s Sweetheart Seer.” Everyone’s in love with the city’s newest It Girl…everyone except the other Diviners.

Piano-playing Henry DuBois and Chinatown resident Ling Chan are two Diviners struggling to keep their powers a secret—for they can walk in dreams. And while Evie is living the high life, victims of a mysterious sleeping sickness are turning up across New York City.

As Henry searches for a lost love and Ling strives to succeed in a world that shuns her, a malevolent force infects their dreams. And at the edges of it all lurks a man in a stovepipe hat who has plans that extend farther than anyone can guess…As the sickness spreads, can the Diviners descend into the dreamworld to save the city?

In this heart-stopping sequel to The Diviners, Printz Award-winning and New York Times bestselling author Libba Bray takes readers deeper into the mystical underbelly of New York City.

My Review:

This is the 2nd book in the series and once again I listened to the audio verion wonderfully narrated by January LaVoy.

The Lair of Dreams follows on almost immediately from where The Diviners finished and once again the listeners (readers) catch up with Evie and her friends in New York in the early 1920’s.

A sleeping sickness has taken over much of Chinatown. People are falling asleep and not waking up, the city is petrified. Loved ones are dying and strange things are happening.

This story centres more around Henry and Ling, both Dream Walkers who find themselves meeting in a dream and forming a close bond over their diviner powers.

Evie is now “engaged” to Sam, Mabel is still in love with Jericho and Jericho is still in love with Evie! The narration is spectacular, the story isn’t quite as good as the first book, but this story enables to the readers to get to know the other characters in more depth and detail.

Atmospheric, chilling, creepy and wonderful, The Lair of Dreams was entertaining and I can’t wait to download the next book in this series.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
