Listen For The Lie – Amy Tintera

What if you thought you murdered your best friend? And if everyone else thought so too? And what if the truth doesn’t matter?

After Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer. Lucy and Savvy were the golden girls of their small Texas town: pretty, smart, and enviable. Lucy married a dream guy with a big ring and an even bigger new home. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all, and if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. It’s been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy can’t remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life.

But now the phenomenally huge hit true crime podcast “Listen for the Lie,” and its too-good looking host Ben Owens, have decided to investigate Savvy’s murder for the show’s second season. Lucy is forced to return to the place she vowed never to set foot in again to solve her friend’s murder, even if she is the one that did it.

My Thoughts:

This is a book that’s had quite a bit of hype over social media and I decided to listen to it using my Audible credit because I love the narrator January LaVoy.

Amy Tintera is the author of several teen novels and Listen for Lie is her first adult book which was an instant New York Times Bestseller and a Good Morning America Book Club pick, and Stephen King said this book is “a page-turner from the first sentence to the very last. In addition to being a world-class whodunit, full of carefully doled-out twists, Lucy is a terrific character, feisty and funny and, it turns out, brave as hell. It’s great fun. Readers will rip through this one” and if that isn’t enough to convince you to read/listen to it, then let me tell you more.

Lucy Chase is the main character. She has a wicked sense of humour, razor sharp wit and now thanks to a True Crime Podcast has just found herself back in the public eye. Several years ago Lucy’s best friend Savvy was found brutally murdered and Lucy was discovered wandering the roadside covered in her best friend’s blood and with absolutely NO memory of what happened. Quickly she became the main suspect, but with no evidence she left her small hometown and distanced herself from everyone except her Grandma.

Listen For The Lie is a true crime podcast run by Ben Owens who is determined to find out what really happened to Savvy on that tragic night and whether Lucy Chase really did viciously kill her best friend. With Lucy’s grandma’s 80th birthday approaching and having just been fired, it’s the perfect time for Lucy to return home to see if she can remember what happened and potentially clear her name.

I can’t recommend this book enough on Audible. Lucy’s voice (and spooky inner voice) are brilliant. Her humour and deadpan wit kept me listening and laughing throughout. Lucy’s grandma is one of the best characters EVER.. she made me laugh out loud at some of the outrageous things she says and does.

I think this will definitely go into my TOP TEN audio books of the year and definitely recommend it to fans of dark humour and mystery thrillers.
