The Echo Wife – Sarah Gailey

I’m embarrassed, still, by how long it took me to notice. Everything was right there in the open, right there in front of me, but it still took me so long to see the person I had married.

It took me so long to hate him.

Martine is a genetically cloned replica made from Evelyn Caldwell’s award-winning research. She’s patient and gentle and obedient. She’s everything Evelyn swore she’d never be.

And she’s having an affair with Evelyn’s husband.

Now, the cheating bastard is dead, and both Caldwell wives have a mess to clean up.

Good thing Evelyn Caldwell is used to getting her hands dirty.

MY THOUGHTS:

I love a bit of spec fic.. and the description above was too delicious to resist.

Evelyn Caldwall is an award-winning scientist whose pioneering cloning research has been used against – by her own husband. He has cloned her in secret, creating a docile and compliant version of Evelyn called Martine. She’s everything her husband wants and appears to be giving her husband everything Evelyn can’t.

On top of the demise of her marriage, the shock of the betrayal and the stress of her research, she learns that her ex-husband is dead and Evelyn must team up with Martine and try to control the escalating problems that could ruin her career.

The story cleverly shows the relationship between the 2 women growing from contempt to respect and perhaps friendship whilst they tackle the issues of a dead ex-husband and all that does entail.

It’s a quick read at just over 250 pages and the story is fast paced which keep me intrigued throughout.

The speculative fiction aspect of the book does ask some big and morally ambiguous questions. It’s dark in places, thought-provoking and overall a really good read.
