She has his dead wife’s heart; the one she wants is his. The author of The Family Plot brings her signature prose to a twisty novel about a heart transplant patient who becomes romantically obsessed with her donor’s husband.
Rosie Lachlan wants nothing more than to find The One.
A year after she was dumped in her wedding dress, she’s working at her parents’ bridal salon, anxious for a happy ending that can’t come soon enough. After receiving a life-saving heart transplant, Rosie knows her health is precious and precarious. She suspects her heart donor is Daphne Thorne, the wife of local celebrity author Morgan Thorne, who she begins messaging via an anonymous service called DonorConnect, ostensibly to learn more about Daphne. But Rosie has a secret: She’s convinced that now that she has his wife’s heart, she and Morgan are meant to be together.
As she and Morgan correspond, the pretense of avoiding personal details soon disappears, even if Rosie’s keeping some cards close to her chest. But as she digs deeper into Morgan’s previous marriage, she discovers disturbing rumours about the man she’s falling for. Could Morgan have had something to do with his late wife’s death? And can Rosie’s heart sustain another break—or is she next?

My Thoughts:
This book has been on my radar for ages and finally I managed to get a copy. I haven’t read anything by Megan Collins before, but the blurb above grabbed my attention. I’m drawn towards unhinged characters, unreliable narrators and deranged personalities for some reason (fictionally obviously NOT in real life).
Cross My Heart is a standalone, pretty dark, psychological thriller that takes obsession to a completely new level.
We follow Rosie. A young woman, who in the last 12 months, has suffered a humiliating break-up with her boyfriend, and then became so ill she had a heart transplant. Now living back at her parents home, she works in the family bridal shop and spends her time taking life-saving medication and dreaming of finding the love of her life.
When she finds out that the donor of her heart was the wife of a local bestselling author, Morgan Thorne, she reaches out to him via an anonymous messaging app called DonorConnect and soon they build up an online connection and friendship.
However, when Rosie starts to follow him more online, she sees that there is a question about how Morgan’s wife actually died and whether he had anything to do with it. Rosie becomes convinced they are meant to be together and starts to obsess and stalk him.
The book is full of twists and turns, secrets and lies, obsession, heartbreak and the occasional murder. Lots of fun and I will look out for more from this author.
A thought-provoking tale of broken hearts both literally and figuratively.
