A Quickie with Mary Kubica

Tell me about your latest book and why we should read it.

EVERY LAST LIE begins when a young father is killed in a car crash with his young daughter in the back seat, although she’s miraculously fine.  The crash is ruled an accident – he was driving too fast and took a sharp turn too quickly – until the coming days when the little girl starts having nightmares about a bad man following their car that fateful afternoon, and pushing it from the road.  The man’s widow sets off to find her husband’s killer.  EVERY LAST LIE is an intense thriller that also explores issues of motherhood, marriage and grief.

If someone was to write your life story what would the title be?

“When Dreams Come True”

What’s the strangest fan question or request you’ve received?

One sweet woman came to an event of mine with a list of words I’d used in my novels, and wanted to know why I chose to use each and every one of them.

If you could co-write with anyone in the world (alive or dead) who would it be?

Heather Gudenkauf.  For one, I am a huge fan of her work, and two, I adore Heather.  I’ve had the pleasure of traveling with Heather on occasion and love any opportunity I have to chat with her.  When it comes to writing, I think we’re of like mind.

Tell me something nobody else knows about you (yet!).

My life is pretty much an open book – there isn’t much others don’t know about me – but I do share my home with four cats and two guinea pigs (in addition to the people I live with).  It’s a bit of a zoo!

Finally please recommend 3 books that you have recently read and tell me why you’ve chosen these.

  • BA Paris’s THE BREAKDOWN: It’s every bit as thrilling as her debut, BEHIND CLOSED DOORS, if not even better.
  • Gilly Macmillan’s WHAT SHE KNEW: A gripping page-turner about a missing 8 year old boy. Will hit close to home for parents, and make them sure to hold their children’s hands just a little tighter when leaving home.
  • SJ Watson’s BEFORE I GO TO SLEEP: One of the best thrillers I’ve ever read. With this, Watson raises the bar high for other authors of the genre.
