Hannah Lynn is an award-winning novelist. Publishing her first book, Amendments – a dark, dystopian speculative fiction novel, in 2015, she has since gone on to write The Afterlife of Walter Augustus – a contemporary fiction novel with a supernatural twist – which won the 2018 Kindle Storyteller Award and the delightfully funny and poignant Peas and Carrots series.
While she freely moves between genres, her novels are recognisable for their character driven stories and wonderfully vivid description.
She is currently working on a YA Vampire series and a reimaging of a classic Greek myth.
Born in 1984, Hannah grew up in the Cotswolds, UK. After graduating from university, she spent ten years as a teacher of physics, first in the UK and then around Asia. It was during this time, inspired by the imaginations of the young people she taught, she began writing short stories for children, and later adult fiction. Now as a teacher, writer, wife and mother, she is currently living in the Austrian Alps.
My Review:
I love quirky books, quirky characters and original story lines and The Afterlife of Walter Augustus certainly ticks all those boxes.
Walter is a wonderful character, he’s been stuck in the afterlife or the interim for decades waiting to be called up to join his family, but he can’t go until the last living soul on earth forgets about him.
Letty is a middle aged woman who works in a shoe shop during the day and bakes cakes in her spare time. Happy with her life, she’s plodding along with her beloved husband by her side and with little or no aspirations except to bake cakes and somehow tell her husband about a “little” secret she’s been keeping from him for years. When Letty accidentally finds herself the owner of a poetry book written decades ago, her life and Walter’s become entangled and life begins to change for both of them.
This beautifully written book allows the reader to think about our long-lost loved ones in a way which I certainly hadn’t before. It’s a clever idea and certainly thought-provoking with lots of feelgood moments and some wonderfully colourful characters.
An very enjoyable break from my normal thrillers and highly recommended to those who like a feelgood, well written story with quirky characters and a thought provoking story line.
