This is Going To Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor – Adam Kay

About the book:   Welcome to the life of a junior doctor: 97-hour weeks, life and death decisions, a constant tsunami of bodily fluids, and the hospital parking meter earns more than you.

Scribbled in secret after endless days, sleepless nights and missed weekends, Adam Kay’s This is Going to Hurt provides a no-holds-barred account of his time on the NHS front line. Hilarious, horrifying and heartbreaking, this diary is everything you wanted to know – and more than a few things you didn’t – about life on and off the hospital ward.

About the author: Adam Kay is an award-winning comedian and writer for TV and film. He previously worked for many years as a junior doctor. His first book ‘This is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor’ was an instant Sunday Times number one bestseller. It has been translated into over twenty languages and was Sunday Times humour book of the year, Books Are My Bag book of the year and non-fiction book of the year, Blackwell’s debut book of the year and iBooks book of the year as well as book of the year selection in The Times, Guardian, Spectator, Daily Express, Sunday Times, and Mail on Sunday.

My Review:  Firstly this book should come with a Health Warning:  Do NOT start reading this late at night unless you don’t need sleep and secondly if you do read it in bed, ensure you are alone as you may end up in hospital when your partner threatens to shove your kindle up your rectum because your constant laughing and snorting is keeping him awake, but thankfully having read up all about PR’s I felt confident that the junior doctors would be able to remove it if necessary.

I don’t know how to explain just how much I loved this book, Adam Kay is a comedy genius.  His dry, sardonic wit literally had me crying with laughter, his sarcasm and self depreciating humour and observational comedy was pure gold.  This is a book that I started and found I could NOT put down even though it was 2am and I had to get up for work at 7am.

This is Going to Hurt is a brilliant and  frank look at the NHS, the wonderful, selfless, dedicated doctors and nurses who work tirelessly to care and help their patients and deserve so much more than recognition and gratitude.

Do I recommend this book?  ABSOLUTELY – read it now and then tell everyone you know to read it.
