Verity – Colleen Hoover

Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish.

Lowen arrives at the Crawford home, ready to sort through years of Verity’s notes and outlines, hoping to find enough material to get her started. What Lowen doesn’t expect to uncover in the chaotic office is an unfinished autobiography Verity never intended for anyone to read. Page after page of bone-chilling admissions, including Verity’s recollection of the night their family was forever altered.

She decides to keep the manuscript hidden from Jeremy, knowing its contents would devastate the already grieving father. But as Lowen’s feelings for Jeremy begin to intensify, she recognizes all the ways she could benefit if he were to read his wife’s words. After all, no matter how devoted Jeremy is to his injured wife, a truth this horrifying would make it impossible for him to continue to love her.

Due to graphic scenes and mature content, this book is recommended for readers 18+.

My Review:

This is a book that a friend has been recommending to me for the past year and I’ve always said I would eventually read it and so I did and OMFG – why did I wait so long? She said it was good… but she didn’t say it was THAT GOOD.

Verity is a severely dark, twisted and disturbing psychological thriller and if I could give it more than 5 stars I would! I was totally gripped and obsessed from the opening paragraph and practically read it in one sitting because it’s THAT GOOD.

In the opening paragraph we meet Lowen on her way to a business meeting in New York when a pedestrian steps out in front of a truck and is killed right in front of her and once you’ve read the author’s description of the blood splatter and the sound of a head popping you know you are in for a bumpy and squeamish ride.

Being offered the writing opportunity of a lifetime, and the ability to pay off her debts and be financially secure, Lowen takes the job of co-writing the last 3 books in a series for best selling author Verity Crawford, since she had a car accident and is currently unable to meet her deadlines. Having met her husband Jeremy she agrees to temporarily move into their family home to read through Verity’s notes to familiarise herself with the series.

All very straightforward up to this part but then the fun begins… and I’m not going to spoil it by revealing anything except parts of the story freaked me out, creeped me out and made my heart beat faster and faster.

Colleen Hoover does NOT hold back and her dark, dry sense of humour is evident throughout the story – so if you are easily spooked this is your warning from me… Verity is creepy with extra creepiness added on.

Thrilling, exciting, dark, disturbing, creepy, clever and completely Unputdownable. 100% recommended and straight into my Top Ten of 2020.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
